MLB: Around The League

Published in Baseball Written by Sports Junkie
MLB: Around The League

MLB: Around The League

Around The League is a new segment on Sports Junkie which will give you the latest headlines and top stories going on in that league. Our first edition will be Major League Baseball, so let's dive in:

Red Sox, Reds, and Phillies Leaders in Oswalt Race

Oswalt is believed to have interest in joining the Cardinals or Rangers, but those clubs may not have the cash to sign him. With only two weeks until spring training, Oswalt may not be able to wait on those guys much longer, and would have to accept a deal from either the Red Sox, Reds, or Phillies.

Manny Ramirez Deciding Between Orioles, Blue Jays, and Oakland

Ramirez has practiced for the Jays, Orioles, and Athletics and has believed to have his options narrowed down to those three teams. The soon to be 40 year old slugger played five games last year for the Rays.

Lincecum Drops 22 Pounds

Tim Lincecum has lost about 22 pounds this off season. Lincecum already had a lanky frame as he was 197 pounds on his 5’11 frame. He started eating healthier and stopped worrying about putting on weight. As a result he will start next season at a weight of 175 pounds.

O’s Trade Jeremy Guthrie to Rockies

The Baltimore Orioles have traded one of their best pitchers to the Rockies. Jeremy Guthrie, who has been the opening day starter for the O’s most of the past few seasons has been shipped to Colorado in exchange for relief pitcher Matt Lindstrom and right-handed pitcher Jason Hammel.

Hamilton Addresses Media Over Alcohol Relapse

Published in Baseball Written by Sports Junkie
Hamilton Addresses Media Over Alcohol Relapse

Josh Hamilton addressed the media in a 12 minute press conference regarding his alcohol relapse earlier this week, and did not answer any questions. He did seem remorseful, but shed no tears and had no prepared speech in hand. Hamilton is a recovering drug and alcohol addict, and was suspended for over three years after being drafted number one overall by the Tampa Bay Rays. Since recovering, Hamilton has been one of the best players in the league, leading his team to back to back AL penants, and winning AL MVP in 2010.

In his press conference, Hamilton said, "Things happened that me, personally, I'm not proud of after I drank, and they are personal and being handled as that. Knowing this was going to get out in social media, Twitter, people get excited. There was no pictures taken of me having a beer with somebody or anything like that, but I did take pictures with people."

Hamilton would not specify what he had done that night, but he was not proud of it. All that was said is that he had a "weak moment" with a family member that stemmed from "personal reasons" and that he walked into a restaurant to have a meal and ended up having three or four drinks. Those drinks were what led to more drinking and probably what led to his actions that he is ashamed of.

Personally, I think the man is entitled to have drinks as long as he is not out of control. Without knowing exactly what happened, I would say that it is in everyone's best interest if we left the man alone, and just made sure that he is surrounded by people who can take care of him if he wants to have a little fun!

Prince Fielder Highlights A Day Filled With Signings

Prince Fielder Highlights A Day Filled With Signings

Tigers Sign Prince Fielder

Yahoo Sports and CBS Sports have both confirmed reports that Prince Fielder has signed with the Detroit Tigers. The deal is reported to be worth $214 million over nine years.

Giants Re-Sign Tim Lincecum

The San Francisco Giants gave into their star pitcher and gave him the contract that he wanted. It is a short deal however, so Lincecum will still have to prove himself if he wants to be worth Pujols or Fielder money. His deal is worth $40.5 million over two seasons.

Blue Jays Sign Francisco Cordero

The Blue Jays have found their set up man and have inked Cordero to a one year contract worth $4.5 million. Corder piled up 150 saves in his tenure with the Reds and had a remarkable ERA of 2.96 over that span.

Blue Jays Re-Sign Brandon Morrow

The Blue Jays avoided arbitration and have re-signed promising young pitcher Brandon Morrow. The deal is worth $20 million and Morrow will be signed through the 2015 season.

Angels and Marlins Go On Spending Spree

Published in Baseball Written by Sports Junkie
Angels and Marlins Go On Spending Spree

Miami and Los Angeles are two of the prettiest, most luxurious, star filled cities in North America. They have made huge splashes in the NBA acquiring multiple stars and are always trying to add to the list (see Chris Paul debacle in NBA). Most recently though, it was the MLB franchises who brought in an influx of stars to bolster their teams value to the public. We all know how people feel about the Lakers and Heat, now the Angels and Marlins are beginning to approach the status of their fellow sports franchises.

The Marlins and Angels have spent $522,500,000 in the past week or so, and the rest of the league as spent just over $214 million over the ENTIRE WINTER. Here is a look at the major signings by these teams:

Angels:

Albert Pujols - $250,000,000

C.J. Wilson - $77,500,000

Marlins:

Jose Reyes - $106,000,000

Mark Buerle - $58,000,000

Heath Bell - $27,000,000

Angels Make Splash, Sign Pujols and Wilson

Published in Baseball Written by Sports Junkie
Angels Make Splash, Sign Pujols and Wilson

Albert Pujols has just signed a 10 year deal worth $250 million with the LA Angels. The Marlins were  not willing to give Pujols a no trade clause and that is why he didn;t sign with them. The Angels incuded that in the deal, and it got done.

Pujols is leaving the Cardinals, the only team he has ever played for and the contract is the third largest in the history of the MLB.

Oh yeah, and the Angels also signed C.J. Wilson to a 5 year $77 million contract.

Marlins Sign Heath Bell

After courting numerous free agents this off season, the Marlins have made their first signing by getting former Padres closer, Heath Bell. The two sides had been in contact for a while now, and have finally come to an understanding. The deal is reported to be worth $27 million over a three year period, with a vesting option on the fourth. Bell is expected to pass his physical and join the team.

David Ortiz Fielding Offers

It was once thought that David Ortiz would re-sign with the Red Sox. However, recent interest in the slugger may have Big Papi reconsidering. There is reportedly "serious interest" and already more than one offer. Ortiz and the BoSox are on good terms, and Ortiz has let them know that he will be testing free agency.

Blue Jays Pursuing Heath Bell

Published in Baseball Written by Sports Junkie
Blue Jays Pursuing Heath Bell

The Blue Jays are in dire need of a closer after finishing dead last in the league last year with 25 blown saves. Heath Bell is still a free agent and the Jays may want to inquire. The Blue Jays were pursuing Ryan Madson earlier, but sources are indicating that they are being persuaded to spend money on a more experienced closer. Blue Jays also had interest in former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, but he signed a record deal in Philly.
