NBA All Star Reserves Announced
East
F – Chris Bosh (Miami Heat)
F – Luol Deng (Chicago Bulls)
C – Roy Hibbert (Indiana Pacers)
G – Andre Igoudala (Philadelphia 76ers)
G – Joe Johnson (Atlanta Hawks)
F – Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics)
G – Deron Williams (New Jersey Nets)
Let me start off by saying that Luol Deng DOES deserve to be an all star, but so do a lot of other players, and he just was not that high on my list. Chris Bosh should probably be in the starting five if this was an everyday NBA team. Joe Johnson and Andre Igoudala were not that high on my list either. Ahead of those guys I had JOSH SMITH who got robbed, by his own teammate. I just don’t get how you put Joe Johnson on the team, and not Josh Smith! I also had Andrea Bargnani and Brandon Jennings (to name a few)
West
F – LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trailblazers)
C – Marc Gasol (Memphis Grizzlies)
F – Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves)
G – Steve Nash (Phoenix Suns)
F – Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas Mavericks)
G – Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs)
G – Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Right off the top of my head I can say that Nowitzki and Nash should not be on the All Star Squad this year. Dirk is having his worst season since his rookie year and there is a lot of talented forwards in the West. Gallinari, Rudy Gay, and Paul Milsap were all great candidates that deserved to be All Stars this year. Yes, Steve Nash is averaging his same customary numbers and he’s always made the team, but if they pick some of the players based on team record, they should be consistent in doing so. Ty Lawson is having a great year and has done wonders for the Nuggets. Kyle Lowry is playing outstanding basketball and is leading the Houston Rockets to the playoffs. Everyone else on the list is well deserving, I can’t wait to see Gasol and Love up front or Westbrook, Griffin and Love on the floor at the same time.
Notables: Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan each didn’t make the All Star team. That was Garnett’s first time in 14 seasons that he didn’t make the team. Duncan didn’t make it for the first time in 13 season (12 as a starter).
NBA Power Rankings: Vol 2.
Welcome to the second edition of NBA Power Rankings. This week Jameel Tharani gave us his insight based on our previous rankings.
1. Chicago: (21-6)
Previous Rank: 1 Record Since: (6-3)
Drose is back and Deng has decided to play through his wrist injury trying to do his best Kobe imitation.
2. Oklahoma City: (19-5)
Previous Rank: 2 Record Since (6-2)
These guys just keep rolling and have the young legs to thrive in a condensed schedule. They beat some good teams down the stretch last week and the ability to close will help them stay at the top of the rankings.
3. Miami: (18-6)
Previous Rank: 3 Record Since: (7-1)
Dwade is back from injury which is the good news, but it was not enough against the bucks who beat them for the second time in 10 days.
4. Philadelphia: (18-7)
Previous Rank: 7 Record Since: (7-2)
The Sixers continue to impress under Collins, but they just can't seem to figure out how to beat the Heat.
5. Indiana: (16-7)
Previous Rank: 5 Record Since: (5-3)
This team is balanced and deep, with a great mix of young talent and veteran leadership.
6. San Antonio: (17-9)
Previous Rank: 11 Record Since: (7-2)
The Spurs are on a roll right now with 2 recent wins against the Grizzlies and one against the Thunder.
7. L.A Clippers: (15-7)
Previous Rank: 9 Record Since: (5-2)
How much the Billups injury is going to hurt is yet to be determined, but this team is deep at that position.
8. Atlanta: (16-9)
Previous Rank: 8 Record Since: (4-4)
The Hawks have done surprisingly well without their big man Horford, with guys like Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Jeff Teague stepping up.
9. Denver: (15-10)
Previous Rank: 6 Record Since: (3-5)
Gallo injury is going to hurt, not to mention other key guys dealing with nagging injuries in Nene, and Afflalo.
10. Boston: (13-10)
Previous Rank: 20 Record Since: (7-1)
The Celtics are on fire right now and seem to be putting it together with everyone healthy.
11. L.A Lakers: (14-11)
Previous Rank: 16 Record Since: (4-3)
Have struggled a bit of late, but the bigger concern is if Kobe can sustain these heavy minutes.
12. Orlando: (15-10)
Previous Rank: 4 Record Since: (6-3)
The Magic went through their worst stretch of games ever since D12 arrived and it's only a matter of time until he leaves.
13. Portland: (14-11)
Previous Rank: 14 Record Since: (5-4)
The Blazers have hopped onto the back of Aldridge and will go as far as he can take them. But credit also goes to the role players. The Blazers are deep and that could help them climb the ranks.
14. Dallas: (14-11)
Previous Rank: 15 Record Since: (4-4)
Dirk is starting to play like Dirk again over the past 2 games. He needs to keep it up for the Mavs to succeed.
15. Utah: (13-10)
Previous Rank: 10 Record Since: (3-5)
Have a talented front court which has carried them to be a competitive team in the playoff hunt so far.
16. Houston: (14-11)
Previous Rank: 12 Record Since: (5-4)
The Rockets are right in the thick of the west playoff race.
17. Memphis: (12-13)
Previous Rank: 13 Record Since: (3-7)
Have struggled of late losing 7 of 10.
18. Minnesota: (12-12)
Previous Rank: 17 Record Since: (5-3)
Have played solid ball all year and the great play of Rubio and Love show that this team has a bright future.
19. Milwaukee: (10-13)
Previous Rank: 18 Record Since: (4-4)
Had big wins recently over the Lakers and the Heat (twice).
20. Phoenix: (10-14)
Previous Rank: 19 Record Since: (4-5)
Gortat has played exceptionally well, but it has not been enough to get this team wins.
21. New York: (10-15)
Previous Rank: 22 Record Since: (4-5)
Struggled mightily and now having to deal with an injury to Melo and a leave of absence for Amare, but might have found the point guard they desperately need in Jeremy Lin.
22. Cleveland: (9-13)
Previous Rank: 21 Record Since: (3-4)
Kyrie Irving has played like a seasoned pro in his rookie year keeping the Cavs competitive in the east playoff race.
23. Golden State: (8-13)
Previous Rank: 24 Record Since: (3-3)
Gstate has plenty of talent, but they lack the size to compete in the big western conference.
24. Sacramento: (9-15)
Previous Rank: 23 Record Since: (3-4)
Have played much better under Keith Smart, but will not compete for a playoff spot in the tough western conference.
25. New Jersey: (8-18)
Previous Rank: 25 Record Since: (3-6)
Lopez injury has really hurt this team and may move to Brooklyn without an all-star.
26. Toronto: (8-18)
Previous Rank: 27 Record Since: (4-5)
Their offense struggles without Bargnani and his return could not come sooner for this team.
27. Detroit: (6-20)
Previous Rank: 26 Record Since: (2-7)
Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight are bright spots in an otherwise tough season in Detroit.
28. Washington: (5-20)
Previous Rank: 29 Record Since: (3-6)
This team has solid young talent, but lack maturity and leadership.
29. New Orleans: (4-21)
Previous Rank: 30 Record Since: (1-8)
Kaman is off the trade block for now and Gordon is still a few weeks out.
30. Charlotte: (3-21)
Previous Rank: 28 Record Since: (0-7)
The Bobcats have been atrocious this year. They have had injuries to deal with but so have many other teams.
NBA All Star Starters
2012 NBA All Star Starting Line Up
East
G - Derrick Rose
G - Dwyane Wade
F - LeBron James
F - Carmelo Anthony
C - Dwight Howard
West
G - Chris Paul
G - Kobe Bryant
F - Kevin Durant
F - Blake Griffin
C - Andrew Bynum
Those are your starters based on NBA fan votes. Obviously, the fans have spoken, but we all know that Kevin Love deserves to be in the starting line up in the West. He has been so dominant, putting up Shaq-like numbers. I also disagree with Carmelo purely based on his shoting percentages, but hey, he's Melo! If it was purely based on how players were playing and not on votes the starting line ups should look something like this:
East
G - Derrick Rose
G - Dwyane Wade
F - LeBron James
F - Andrea Bargnani
C - Dwight Howard
Am I crazy? Bargnani? I am a little crazy, but hey, look at the facts. Among all forwards in the East (other than LBJ), Andrea has been playing the best. His numbers are very similar to Carmelo's, however, he is much more efficient. I considered Melo, Bosh, Ryan Anderson, and Paul Pierce, but I think Bargnani has been playing the best, and he just continues to impress me with his overall offensive game.
West
G - Chris Paul
G - Kobe Bryant
F - Kevin Durant
F - Kevin Love
C - Marc Gasol
Kevin Love and Marc Gasol up front would probably the most dominant front court the NBA has ever seen. Griffin sure does deserve to be in the starting line up, but not more than those two bigs. Bynum without question does not deserve it and these two are hands down my picks to be in the starting line up. Honourable mention goes to Lamarcus Aldridge.
But instead, you are going to see what will probably be Team USA's most athletic lineup against the boys from LA plus Durant. Either way, the NBA All star weekend is always excited regardless of what happens or who plays!
Hey everyone,
This column will be a weekly fixture here on Sports Junkie from here on out. Off the top, I will detail new pick-ups with an eye towards the upcoming week in the schedule. Then, I will list my personal top 10 (based on standard categories) for the rest of the season at each position. Think about these lists as helpful references when making trades, offers, and the like. Let’s dive right in.
Pick-Ups (owned in less than 40% of Yahoo! leagues)
Marreese Speights – There have been ups and downs with Speights since he has come over to Memphis, but offensively, the talent is there. He shoots the mid-range jumper extremely well, and with Randolph out of the picture for the foreseeable future, he will definitely see the touches. His biggest problem has been staying on the floor, as he is averaging 2.6 personal fouls per 21min of floor time with Mem. With 5 games in the upcoming week, feel free to roll him with a tad of confidence.
Jason Smith – Another player (similar to Speights) with a lot of range, a diverse offensive game, and limited defensive ability. Now that the Hornets have advised Kaman to stay home until they can find a suitable trade, Smith becomes the de facto starter at PF and will see the majority of minutes going forward. He can contribute in points, rebounds, and blocks, averaging 9, 4, and 1.3 respectively over the last week while shooting 65%.
Tiago Splitter – With the games piling up on San Antonio and Pop dedicated to resting Timmy throughout the season, Tiago has been the main benefactor of late. Over the last 2 weeks, Tiago has averaged 21:30 of playing time, and has been extremely productive with 12.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.5 blocks on a fiery 73.1% shooting over that timespan. His minutes can only rise as he looks to displace Blair, and is a good option going forward.
Rodrigue Beaubois – A little bit more of a pick-up looking to the future here. Kidd has battled injury this season, the Mavs will certainly look to rest some of their vets, and there are minutes for the taking at the back-up PG and SG spots depending on how the West/Carter situation plays out. Keep an eye on Roddy, because his per-min stats are ridiculous, all he needs is the playing time at this point.
Mickael Pietrus (short-term Plug n’ Play) – If you need 3s, look no farther than Pietrus for the coming week. As long as Ray Ray is on the shelf, Mickael is in a great situation. Over the last 14 days he has been averaging 2.7 three-pointers made per contest, and that number should hold in the upcoming week as he has an extremely easy schedule that includes @Cle, Tor, NYK, and Mem.

The Hawks are 5-1 without Horford, with the explosive play of Jeff Teague and an energized Josh Smith |

9 |
LA Clippers (9-5) |
CP3 has missed the last 5 games, with the Clippers going 3-2. With a healthy CP, the Clippers can win on any given night. |

Utah (10-5) |
Tyrone Corbin seems to be making the best of what he has to work with |

11 |
San Antonio (10-7) |

|
19 |
Phoenix (6-9) |
Picked up road wins in New York and Boston with improved play from Nash and Gortat’s 7 straight double doubles |
|
20 |
Boston (6-9) |
With all the talk about Danny Ainge breaking up the big three, they’ve been underachieving to say the least. All their wins have come against sub .500 teams. |
|
21 |
Cleveland (6-9) |
Kyrie Irving is off to an impressive rookie performance averaging 17.4 ppg shooting 50 percent from the field and 42.5 from behind the arc. They’re still the Cavs though, and have lost the last 3 games |
|
22 |
New York (6-10) |
The Knicks have lost 6 straight with their offense completely out of sync. Amare seems to be checked out and Melo is carrying the losses on his back. All fingers should be pointed at Dantoni. Going 6-10 with two superstars and a top defensive player is unacceptable. |
|
23 |
Sacramento (6-11) |
With wins against San Antonio and Indiana, the Kings showed some cohesion under Keith Smart. They have lots of talent, but a lack of veteran leadership and inexperience continues to plague their roster. |
|
24 |
Golden State (5-10) |
Late game breakdowns continue to affect the Warriors. Although they missed Curry for 8 games, Mark Jackson’s playoff guarantee isn’t looking so good |
|
25 |
New Jersey (5-12) |
The Nets have the highest opponent field goal percent (48.6) and three point percentage (43) in the league. Unless they can acquire Dwight, they can say goodbye to D-Will |
|
26 |
Detroit (4-13) |
The Pistons edged out a win over the Blazers on Saturday but continue to struggle putting an offensive possession together |
|
27 |
Toronto (4-13) |
The Raptors have dropped 8 straight. Their offensive production has fallen with Bargnani watching from the sideline. |
|
28 |
Charlotte (3-14) |
With only 1 win in their last 11 games, the Bobcats can’t buy a win right now. They’ve had a pretty tough schedule. They’ve been keeping up with teams but can’t seem to close out games |
|
29 |
Washington (2-14) |
The Wizards had a big win against Oklahoma City and had a chance to pull off a win against Boston but reminded us why they’re 2-14. With a boat load of talent, they should be better than their record |
|
30 |
New Orleans (3-13) |
The Hornet’s have dropped 8 straight at home. Even though Eric Gordon has been injured for an extended period, they’re just not competitive without CP |

The Rise of the Sixers
When flipping through the channels, you see on ESPN that the Philadelphia 76ers are number one in the power rankings, you'd think it was 1983 and you were heading out to see a Hall and Oates concert. But no, it's 2012 and one month into the season the Sixers are having their best start since the '00/'01 season. This high powered offense is currently on a two game win streak, winning eight out of their last nine, and undefeated at home. Averaging 101 points a game, and holding opponents to 86 ppg, this team is surging on both offense and defense. At the moment, this team is top ten in the four major categories(ppg, rpg, apg, and pa).
Most of the credit here has to go to head coach Doug Collins. He has an incredible way of bringing out the best in his players and letting them play to their strengths. No better example of this is, Andre Iguodala, the longest tenured Sixer who is quite possibly having the best season of his career. In his 8th season, Iggy is a candidate for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, leading the Sixers with 2.2 steals a game, and a shoe in for NBA All-Defensive team.
This team is about nine deep and has one of the strongest benches in the league, with Lou Williams leading the pack. When Sweet Lou isn't busy in the studio, he's busy leading the Sixers with 16.1 ppg, 86% from the free throw line with 4.2 free throws made a game, and one of the top contenders for Sixth Man of the Year.
Another nice surprise here is sophomore shooting guard, Evan Turner, who has returned this year with an improved game after a mediocre rookie season. In the extended off-season, Turner improved his shot with Philadelphia basketball legend, Herb Magee, and it shows. E.T. is still coming off the bench, but looks to be earning starting minutes with the surging Sixers.
May be pre-mature, but with the Sixers being the 2nd seed in the East, this 9-3 team could surprise the league in the months coming. For once, Philadelphia fans have more to cheer about this season other than getting free Big Mac's every time the team goes over 100 points at home.

Sixers Trade Speights to Grizzlies in Three-Way Deal
I guess we know that Dell Demps doesn't mind a little menage a trois. Another three team deal that the Hornets GM has his foot in and this time it was to acquire guard Xavier Henry from the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies will receive Marreese Speights and the Sixers in return will receive multiple second round draft picks. The deal is set to be complete later today.
Crawford Joins Blazers
The Blazers have signed veteran guard Jamal Crawford to a two year, $10 million deal. The amnesty of Brandon Roy was necessary for this trade to be complete.
Crawford is an 11 year veteran who has averaged 15.4 points per game over his career with four different teams. The guard will be needed after Brandon Roy was forced into an early retirement.
LA Clippers Trade For Chris Paul
After numerous declined trades by the NBA front office, led mostly by the wisdom of David Stern, the Los Angeles Clippers have finally put together a package that is worthy of the star point guard. Don't get me wrong, the other deals were worthy, but David Stern felt like the team could get more, and he was right.
The Hornets have acquired star guard Eric Gordon, veteran center Chris Kaman, and sophomore forward Al-Farouq Aminu. On top of that they managed to get Minnesota's first round pick from the Clippers, all in exchange for Chris Paul (who was slated to become a free agent next year) and two second round draft picks.
Grading the Deal:
Hornets: A+
These guys just turned an expiring contract into a franchise with a future. They also received a superstar in the making in Eric Gordon, who I believe to be one of the most underrated guards in the league. They also received front court help, and a draft pick that will surely be a top ten choice in a star filled draft class. The Hornets are set up to be contending for a championship in the near future, if they can make the right moves, and the right draft picks over the next couple of season, and I truly believe that. Great deal for the Hornets, and great justification by David Stern as to why he would decline any previous deals.
Clippers: A-
A lot of people would wonder why the Clippers would trade so much away for one player with questionable knees and no guarantee past the 2013 season. If you know the NBA, you know Chris Paul is the best player at his position. As a part of the deal, Paul agreed to pick up his option for next season, and the chances of him staying after that are quite high. This easily makes the Clippers a playoff team for the next two years, and if they accomplish anything in those playoffs, you know that Paul will stay. Furthermore, Clippers own a front court that finishes extremely well. Jordan and Griffin finished second and third in the NBA last year in dunks. With the addition of Chris Paul, there is no limit to the amount of easy baskets this team can score. It is actually quite scary to think about how to stop them. The Clippers have just set themselves up to be worth much more money with their star powered offense, and have also set themselves up to win now. If they can trade one of the players in their crowded backcourt for an additional big man, this could very well be your championship team in one of the next two years.
Dwight Howard Staying Put For Now
Earlier this week, Orlando Magic center, Dwight Howard, requested a trade to the Nets. After his request, general manager, Otis Smith, gave the superstar an opportunity to speak with potential teams he might sign an extension with. Those teams included the Nets, Mavericks, and Lakers. More recently, the Bulls said they had a package ready for Howard, which would include young talent, cap relief, and draft picks.
Now they are telling Howard that he might have to stay put, in order for them to get the best deal possible. "We wouldn't be who we are if we didn't take a look around all 29 teams and try to make the best deal for the Orlando Magic," said GM Otis Smith.
"[S]ources close to the team said there will be no rush to judgment on Howard's fate, no matter how uncomfortable the relationship might get leading up to the March trade deadline," writes Sam Amick. "When Howard requested a trade earlier this week, the source said he was told the Magic wouldn't succumb to the mounting pressure and that Howard should be prepared to play for the Magic for the foreseeable future."
