Superbowl Preview

Published in Football Written by Sports Junkie
Superbowl Preview

New York Giants (12-7) vs. New England Patriots (15-3)

Line: Patriots by 3.0

Notable Facts:

  1. Rob Gronkowski is listed as questionable with a high ankle sprain (has not practiced)
  2. The biggest battle in this game will be the Patriots O-Line vs. Giants D-Line
  3. Patriots have improved their rushing defense and pass rush as of late (held Ray Rice to 89 rushing yards on 27 carries and have eight sacks in the past two contests)
  4. Eli Manning could solidify himself as a top three playoff quarterback with a win in this game
Why pick the Giants?
  1. These two teams are pretty evenly matched up, but the edge goes to the Giants front four, and if you are getting points AND have the edge as the better team, its hard to not pick the Giants
  2. Giants may feel disrespected as underdogs as they have been the best team in the NFL the past five weeks
  3. The team that is the better seed in the Superbowl is 1-11-2 against the spread
Why pick the Patriots?
  1. Tom Brady will be in revenge mode. He has a history with the Giants (2007 Superbowl) and he did not play well last game. Brady is bound to have a HUGE game, and will likely be in "Fuck You" mode like he was against the Broncos
  2. Majority on Giants side as 65% of bets are on the NFC champions. Despite this, the line has not moved, so the house stands to lose a ton of money if the Giants win.
  3. Belichick and Brady are 11-2 against the spread versus teams they lost to earlier in the same year. These guys know how to prepare, and it will be tough for the Giants to beat them twice in one season
Other Notable Trends:
  1. Patriots are 27-15 against the spread versus NFC opponents since 2001
  2. Tom Brady is 135-43 as a starter (104-70 ATS)
  3. Tom Brady is 16-5 in the playoffs (9-12 ATS)
  4. Tom Brady is 9-3 ATS in domes
Pick: I'm going with the Patriots in this one. My head is telling me to pick the Giants, but I always go with my gut, which is saying Brady won't let his team lose again. I think if any team has a chance of winning by a large margin, it will be the Patriots, and if the Giants do win, it will have to be by a field goal. With that potential to go off, I can't confidently pick the Giants, but I do have some confidence in the Patriots. I got them winning 28-24.

NFL Conference Championship Recap

Published in Football Written by Sports Junkie
NFL Conference Championship Recap

AFC Championship Recap

It all came down to the right foot of kicker Billy Cundiff. With 15 seconds left and the Patriots up 23-20, Cundiff had a 32-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. A kick which he has kicked over a thousand times in his career. This time the moment was too much for him and Cundiff shanked it wide left. Moving Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to the Super bowl for the first time since 2008.

The missed field goal certainly did help Brady who was having an irregular off game for the usually calm, cool and collected big game finisher. The Ravens defence did all they could to limit Brady and the Patriots high powered offence kept Brady in check as he finished with only 239 passing yards, no passing touchdowns and two interceptions. He did have a rushing touchdown in the 4th quarter that was the winning score of the game.  Joe Flacco on the other hand, had the game of his life. Flacco who was called out earlier in the week by team veteran Ed Reed for not playing up to the moment in the playoffs, stepped up under the spot light. Finishing the game with 306 passing yards, and two touchdowns.  As much as Flacco and the Ravens defence stepped up and did enough to put them in a position to win the game. It was just not meant to be this year.

The game leaves us with a of couple questions. First, will the Ravens defence be able to come back next year. Ed Reed and Ray Lewis are not in their primes anymore, will they have enough in them to come back next year using this loss as motivation for a Super Bowl run next year. Secondly, which Brady will show up for the Super Bowl. If it’s the one that showed up Sunday in the AFC championship game there might be hope for the Giants. However, if it’s the Brady who has been tearing apart the league this past year, well the game will then just be a mere formality.

NFC Championship Recap

The dream ride continues for the New York Giants. A team that was just about out in the regular season has now won five straight must-win games to make it to the Super Bowl. The road to the big game was not without their fair share of drama and a little bit of luck.

With superstar kick returner, Ted Ginn Jr. out with an injury he suffered in the previous road. Second year wide receiver, Kyle Williams was put into that role. A name that every 49er fan will remember for the rest of their lives. Williams who botched two separate punt returns both in the clutch moment, had a big hand in costing the 49ers the game. First, in the fourth quarter he muffed a punt that bounced off his knee, setting the Giants up with an amazing field position to set up the go ahead touchdown. Then in overtime, he was stripped by Jacquian Williams to give the Giants the ball in field goal range, handing the Super Bowl to the Giants on a silver platter. A few plays later, Kicker Lawrence Tynes lined up for a 31 yard field goal, which he nailed right down the middle sending the Giants to the Super Bowl and a rematch of the Super Bowl XLII against the Patriots.

However, all the blame can’t just be put on Kyle Williams. The 49ers as a team were only 1-for-13 on third down conversions.  With the only conversion coming on the last play of regulation in which the Giants were just preventing the touchdown. As a team they did not play at the level they set for themselves all year. The defence forced no turnovers, and dropped three routine interceptions, something very uncharacteristic for a team that topped the league in almost every defensive category. As well San Francisco's wide receivers had just one catch the entire game. Any team would have had a problem winning games with stats like that. One shining spot for the 49ers was the emergence of Vernon Davis once again. The big fella came to play in the playoffs and caught two touchdown passes and 12 yards.

Once again Eli Manning stepped up big in the spotlight, finishing the game with 316 passing yards and two touchdown passes. He also set a Giants record for most passes and pass completed in a game going 32 for 58. His two favourite receivers came through once again as Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks combined for 15 catches and 197 yards.

This leads us to a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, will we see the same result as we had in 2008. Or will Brady be looking for revenge and come out gunning against the team that ruined his perfect season. We will find out in two weeks.

AFC Championship Preview

AFC Championship Preview

Baltimore Ravens (13-4) @ New England Patriots (14-3)

I know this game is up first, but I had to post this last because this one has my special guarantee. There is no way New England is winning by more than a touchdown in this game, and kudos to you if you got the line at -7.5
Line: NE by 7.0

Pointers:
  • Baltimore has struggled against the run as of late, giving up 4.4 YPC over the past four games
  • Patriots have been worse against the run (5.2 YPC) and Ray Rice should have a field day
  • New England is overrated because of their week 19 blowout and the Ravens are underrated because of their struggles with T.J. Yates
  • Teams that score 40+ in the playoffs are 3-19 ATS the following week since 1996 (worked in 49ers favour last week)
  • Since 2002, teams coming off victories of 21+ in the playoffs are just 4-9 ATS the following week
  • Favourites of 7+ in championship games are 3-7 ATS since 1997
  • Tom Brady is 15-5 in the playoffs but only 9-11 ATS
Pick: The winner of this game is tough to call but this one is going to be real close to make sure to take the points and pick Baltimore to cover the spread. If the Ravens commit to the run and play smart with the ball, they should have no problem putting up big points against a shitty Patriots defense. No doubt that the Brady Bunch will be able to put up points against Baltimore, but no where close to what they did last week. The win is a toss up in this one, but I'm going with the Patriots to win 31-28.

NFC Championship Preview

Published in Football Written by Sports Junkie
NFC Championship Preview

New York Giants (11-7) @ San Francisco (14-3)

The 49ers will host the Giants on Sunday and will play their first playoff game since 2003, where ironically enough, they lost to the Giants 39-38 in a thriller of a match. This game may go a little differently, and here is everything you need to know going into the match up, and some pointers if you are putting some money on it.

Line: SF by 2.5

Pointers:

  • San Francisco beat New York in week 10 (27-20)
  • 49ers have allowed the fewest rushing yards to opposing teams all year (77) and the second least points allowed per game (14.3)
  • Giants are 32-17 ATS on the road 2002
  • 49ers pass defense is significantly better than the Giants, so Eli Manning has to have "one of those games"
  • The one area the Niners are really lacking is offensive line. They have surrendered 48 sacks this year and with Tuck and Pierre-Paul lining up against them, its going to be a tough day for Alex Smith as well.
  • Even though San Francisco is the favourites, there is more pressure on the Giants. This was already a far more successful season for the Niners, psychological edge goes to them.
Pick: In order for the Giants to beat the 49ers they have to protect Manning and put pressure on Alex Smith to win the game. If you put all your faith in Smith, more often then not, he will let you down. The Giants also need to protect the ball, the 49ers can easily take the ball away and win the game on defense, so the Giants must be careful! The Niners can win this game by staying with the Giants. As long as they don't fall behind early, San Francisco has a great shot at winning this game. They can't rely on Smith two weeks in a row, instead they will rely on the defensive Smiths (Aldon and Jason) to take care of this one. look for the Giants offense to settle for field goals on offense and make some costly errors. I think the 49ers beat the Giants at home 24-20.

Oakland Raiders Fire Hue Jackson

Published in Football Written by Sports Junkie
Oakland Raiders Fire Hue Jackson

Just four days after hiring new General Manager Reggie Mackenzie, the Oakland Raiders have decided to fire head coach Hue Jackson. After the death of long time owner and GM Al Davis, Jackson was responsible for all team transactions and made a few mistakes this season, leading to his firing.

The Raiders need a fresh start. After the death of their owner and a sub-par season, their new GM and soon to be new head coach should help this team begin their journey back to the top.

NFL Playoffs: Wild Card Round Preview (Sunday)

Published in Football Written by Sports Junkie
NFL Playoffs: Wild Card Round Preview (Sunday)

Atlanta Falcons (10-6) @ New York Giants (9-7)

Line: NYG by 3.0

Pointers:

  • Falcons have a 1-5 record versus playoff teams
  • Atlanta has a terrible pass defense, and was ranked 18th in the regular season facing below average quarterbacks for the most part of the season
  • Matt Ryan has not played an outdoor playoff game and in his two previous playoff experiences he has a 3:4 TD:INT ratio and a QB Rating of 71.2
  • Giants are limiting opposing running backs to 3.8 YPC since week 13
Pick: I really think Eli Manning is going to have a field day with this Falcons secondary. Matt Ryan may or may not find his groove, and there is now way I can put money down on a maybe. Giants are the way to go, they'll win 28-20.
Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) @ Denver Broncos (8-8)

Line: PIT by 9.5

Pointers:
  • First and foremost, this line is ridiculous. Pittsburgh failed to cover against KC and Cleveland, how is Denver worse than those teams?!
  • Lots of shady line movement, lots of action on Pittsburgh but no line movement
  • The Steelers have just one double digit victory on the road this year, and almost lost in Indy while Kerry Collins was playing!
  • Steelers are 1-8 ATS as favourites of 9 or more on the road since 2004
  • Big Ben is 9-3 ATS in the playoffs and 6-2 ATS as a favourite
Pick: I still think the Steelers win this game but no way in HELL that they cover this spread. Heck, seeing the way this team has played on the road this year, they might even get Tebowed. Take the points to the bank, Steelers win 21-14.

NFL Playoffs: Wild Card Round Preview (Saturday)

Published in Football Written by Sports Junkie
NFL Playoffs: Wild Card Round Preview (Saturday)

Cincinnati Bengals (9-7) @ Houston Texans (10-6)

Line: HOU by 3.0

Pointers:

  • Bengals are 0-7 against teams that qualified for the playoffs
  • Houston beat Cincy in week 14 (20-19) and both rookie QBs got the start
  • Bengals have only covered the spread once since week 9
  • Andre Johnson is back
  • Quarterbacks making their first start in the playoffs as home favourites are 2-10 ATS
  • Houston is 32-16 ATS after two consecutive losses

Pick: Two rookie quarterbacks, both in their first ever playoff match up. I don't care how much better Dalton is than Yates, this game is on the defenses' shoulders. Both teams feature great defenses, however, the shear athleticism of Houston's defense should be enough to help them shut down the Bengals. With Foster and Tate lining up behind Yates, the Texans should be able to move the chains effectively. I got the Texans winning 24-17.

Detroit Lions (10-6) @ New Orleans Saints (13-3)

Line: NWO by 11.5

Pointers:

  • Saints beat the Lions in week 13 (Lions were without Suh and Delmas, who return for this matchup)
  • Saints have not lost a home game all year
  • 62% of the action is on the Saints
  • Lions are 15-9 ATS as double-digit underdogs since 2006 and Saints are 4-11 as double digit favourites under Sean Payton
Pick: Before you actually bet on this pick, please know that I am a BIG Lions fan. With that said, I think the Saints win this one. However, I think it is going to come right down to the wire, and Drew Brees wins it on the last drive. Take the points! Saints win 38-34.

Sam Hurd Arrested for Drug Possession/Trafficking

Former Cowboys wide receiver, and current Bears receiver, Sam Hurd has been arrested on drug charges. Earlier reports were for possession, and police caught Hurd trying to pick up off a dealer. Now reports are indicating that Hurd was dealing these drugs to NFL players. Police say they have a list of the NFL players, and it is in the 'double digits'.

NFL: Thursday Night Preview

Published in Football Written by Sports Junkie
NFL: Thursday Night Preview

Cleveland Browns (4-8) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3)

Line: PIT by 14.5

Pointers:

> Big Ben has an injured thumb, and Cleveland has a very good (and very underrated) pass defense. In fact they have only allowed more than 200 passing yards ONCE since week 5.

> Browns gave up nearly 300 rushing yards last week

> Steelers are 24-9 ATS in December games since 2000.

> Big Ben is 26-14 ATS against the AFC North

Pick: I really can't see the Browns doing anything on offense against the Steelers. Pittsburgh for the blowout win 35-10.

Key Injuries: Peyton Hillis was listed as questionable and his status is active for tonight. Nothing serious for the Steelers

Fantasy Advice: Rashard Mendenhall has a field day and I'd start Mike Wallace. Be weary of starting Big Ben (thumb injury + tough Browns pass D)
