Like we needed anything more to fuel this rivalry - the Canada, Russia match was a thrilling one, as always. However, as exciting as it was, it was over late in the second period. Russia built up a five goal lead that is pretty much impossible to overcome in just one period. If anyone was going to do it, it would have been the Canadians, and they put up a great effort in the third. Canada scored four goals in the third and forced Russia to change goalies with just about four minutes to go. Andrei Makarov was called upon and stopped seven Canadian shots to hold on for victory.
It truly is disappointing for Team Canada, and all Canadians for that matter, as we are used to seeing our boys in Red in the finals. Canada has made the finals in every year from 2002-2011, going 5-5 in that span. The bronze medal match is scheduled for Thursday at 3PM against the Finnish squad. The Gold Medal game is at 8PM and will feature Team Russia against Team Sweden.
